The reason the Tedsel might accept a buyout is because there's a clause in his contract that requires him to seek work in college/NFL immediately (and for the university to decrease their payments by whatever amount he's paid in salary). Jeff might prefer the security of a certain lump sum.
The most hilarious thing about this whole ordeal is the delusions of 59er fans. They are so sure they'll have an awesome coach. I brought up Willie Taggart as a possibility to one 59er fan, and you would've thought I suggested a round of non-alcoholic beer and cooking chocolate for everyone. As if the 59ers are too good for Willie Taggart. Hah.
Anyway, this is going to be handled badly. How do I know this? Because if kal were interested in handling this well, they would've fired T.edford already and gotten the jump on a coaching search -- just like Arizona did last year. If they wait til the end of the season, who knows what happens -- maybe Kiffin gets fired, maybe Chip Kelly decides he wants the NFL. Then, instead of first in line on West Coast jobs, you're second or third. Oops. (There's also the risk of missing out on a hot coach somewhere else. SJSU's Mike MacIntyre is supposedly a leading candidate for the Kentucky job. Now, maybe you want him, maybe you don't -- but he's definitely someone who'd be on my list if I were Barbour.)
So here's what's going to happen: kal fires the Tedsel, they hire some no-name coordinator or mid-major guy with an undistinguished record, 59ers attempt to convince themselves that they've finally got their Moses to lead them to Canaan Pasadena.
