Stanford made a strong statement today. The statement is Rachel Heck is back and Stanford will be a serious contender at NCAAs when it plays like it did today.
On a day with tough playing conditions (temperatures in the 40s and 50s, northwest winds 10-20 mph), Stanford was rock solid. The team posted a score of -14 on a day when no other team was under par.
The team was led by Rachel Heck who posted a bogey-free 65 (-7)!! This may have been one of her best ever rounds as a Cardinal. She is now 1 stroke behind teammate Paula Martin Sampedro who shot 68 and is the overall individual leader. In 3rd place is Kelly Xu after a 69. Yes, Stanford is 1-2-3 on the individual scoreboard. Sadie Englemann was steady at 72. And Megha Ganne was Stanford's drop score at 73 (which included a 33 on the back 9).
Stanford now leads 2nd place Duke by 12 shots and 3rd place Virginia by 27(!) shots. There is no question that Stanford will advance to the NCAAs by finishing in the top 5. The team's challenge tomorrow will be to stay focused and continue to play the game that was so successful today.
