In an era of courses over 7,000 yards what will be the easiest and hardest holes for the men to play? Do they let the rough grow a lot and how fast are the greens now days. I know it has been through two major alterations in the last 15 years or so. I understand they were mostly changes to bunkers. Is that correct. I am just sort of interested how the course lays out for the power game, or do you just leave your driver in the bag?
my take. greens, overall turf and conditioning are much better than in the days of Summerhays, Yates and Schaaf. and you are right about technology making some differences on how you play the course. hardest holes today to me are 3, 12, 2 and 6. in old days, I'd have gone 12, 3, 6 and 18. technology has made 9, 11 and 15 drivable par 4s for the kids. the trees on 5, 6 and 12 aren't as bothersome as they were in years past, but trees are now much more grown in on left of 2 and left of 7. you can't miss long left and get away with it like you used to be able to. #14 green is more tiered now thanks to the poor reconstruct job by the golf course redesign architects from 25 years. best hole ever was before the 1981 NCAAs when you had to play right of the trees on 12, with long grass in fairway left. going right from the back trees brought the creek and trees on the right into. unfortunately, the grounds crew cut the fairway left right before the tournament. much safer over there although longer.
