Muir has said that we didn't have the option to join the Big Ten, though there are some who don't see that as mutually exclusive with having been offered a secret deal.  I don't think the Big Ten would have offered Stanford before USC/UCLA, UW, and Oregon.  Those four programs command much greater market share.
