The AP poll just came out and it has Stanford #1, followed very closely by Connecticut. Baylor slips to 3 and Duke to 4.
Voters were very divided as to whether to give the #1 slot to Stanford or Connecticut.
Of course, we will play Connecticut in December and settle this in a real way. Connecticut looks superb this year, and now they will have a chip on their shoulders as they come to play us. And there is no telling if we can win out before playing them--we have a tough road trip to South Carolina and Tennessee before that. What we can definitely say is that if we win all of those games then we will absolutely deserve to be #1. Right now, there is a lot of room for doubt.
I hope our players will not let this go to their heads--I know the experienced ones will not. However, there is something very motivational about being disrespected, as has happened more than once when we were seeded too low going into the NCAAs. I'm not too happy that we are #1 so early in the season, and doubt that anything good will come of it, other than whipping up even more pride among us Stanford WBB fans.
