Looking forward to next year, the clear trouble -- assuming Ertz leaves, and even if he stays -- is the lack of playmakers overall, especially in producing big plays. (Hogan has been insanely accurate, completing over 70% of his passes, but yards per completion shows a lack of big plays, resulting in a merely OK 7.32 YPA.) The question is, how can we get back up to 8 YPA, the divider between the OK and good on one hand, and the elite?
The question of where the wideouts will come from is important and has been discussed a lot. I'm wondering if the coaches will look in unconventional places for playmakers. Alex Carter mentioned during his recruitment that the coaches had brought up the idea of playing two ways, if only for a few plays on offense. That seems like a good start.
The other idea I was thinking of came up while watching Michigan games the past two weeks. One thing they've done a very interesting job of, is integrating Denard Robinson as a kind of all-purpose threat: as a wideout, as a runner (and presumed passer) in the backfield, etc. Given that Dallas Lloyd is supposedly a top-tier athlete -- and, if you've seen his high school highlight tape, has some moves -- might it be a good idea to make Lloyd into that kind of all-purpose threat? Otherwise, it seems to me, you're just letting Lloyd chill out on the bench for a few years while the Hogan era marches on (and maybe barely see the field at all, if we have some sort of Virginia dynasty with Burns. Hopefully the greatest Virginia dynasty since the early days of the Presidency, but who's keeping track.)
