I finally watched some footage of the big fight — it was much worse than I imagined.
I think it reflects incredibly poorly on Ohio State. Who cares if some Michigan players were waving a flag.
Visiting teams have stormed our stadium after beating us, I stormed Cal after 1990 Big Game.
You don’t run onto the field after a home loss and confront the victorious visiting team.
Also, doesn’t it look like one of the Sheriffs was trying to get some hits on the Michigan players? Incredibly unprofessional, possibly illegal? Apparently police also used pepper spray on players.
It wasn’t flag waving that upset the Ohio State players, it was the attempt by the Michigan players to plant their flag on the Ohio logo. Watching the entire melee in real time left me with the impression that the Michigan players were in the wrong for initiating the fracas.
Michigan needed to stay on the field because many players and coaches on the winning team are expected to stay on the field for various media obligations. The BigTen gets a big chunk of money with media rights, so the winners in BigTen games tend to spend quite a bit of time on the field post-game.
tOSU should have been strolling back to the locker room for their losing team interviews. That didn't happen. The definitely should not have returned to the field no matter what Michigan players were doing. If the Michigan players were literally tearing down goal posts or tearing up the field tOSU had field security and a fleet of police officers to enforce that stuff, and the BigTen would have levied a very healthy fine to Michigan for any damages.
After the melee cleared up...tOSU players were escorted off the field by the police and game security while the Michigan players even those that were pepper sprayed, stayed on the field in the very same spot to...complete the various BigTen on field interviews that the BigTen contest winners are normally expected to complete.
Michigan were obnoxious winners, but tOSU players' desire to storm back on the field was pathetic. They were 20+ point favorites. If they really didn't want Michigan to celebrate on their field then don't lose to a 20+ point underdog.
