I think you meant Shay, and this one, at least, was by design.  Oesterle told us at the chalk talk that Ijiwoye would defend the much taller 3 point specialist, on the theory that sometimes shorter players can get under the dribble of taller players and be disruptive.  It seemed to work at first, but less well as Syracuse adapted.
