Well, he wasn’t the first. IIRC, both Tom Davis and Trent Johnson left for essentially the same reason.

Didn't Montgomery also get very frustrated with his prospects getting turned down by admissions?

  Yes Monty got frustrated, especially due to the new director of admissions who disliked athletics and rejected applicants who in previous years had been admitted, not mentioned that under Monty his teams had 100% graduation rate IIRC.

I also seem to remember that Dawkins said that prior to taking the Stanford job, he talked with both Trent Johnson and Montgomery.
