The focus on academics is one of the main attractions if not the most important attraction for the majority of students applying to Stanford. You could turn Stanford into a community college environment to avoid "mental stress and issues". I would be 100% against that.
I would be ok with a rejuvenated PAC-12 of west coast schools. It won't have the football TV revenue of a power four conference. But for Olympic sports (where my interest lies) the revenue wouldn't be that much different in a "lesser" league. Olympic sports could fill the non-conference schedule to the brim with powerhouse opponents. Then the team runs roughshod through the conference until the NCAA tournament. I think many sports would be ok with that.
