The OBBBA version being debated in the Senate now would impose an 8% tax on Stanford’s endowment income, up from the current 1.4%, but substantially less than the 21% in the House version. Depending on the year, it could cost Stanford $100M a year more than currently and possibly $200 million or more. It would make endowment contributions substantially less attractive than contributions to current operations, which are facing a large deficit for the foreseeable future.
