He's a California native, that's good. It's his third time in the portal. Not so good.
Tennessee needs him and they have a high-powered offense. Still, Reich is a former NFL QB and Luck is a former NFL QB, and they could make the case that he'll develop more at Stanford than at Tennessee. Alabama might need a QB. Retzlaff probably doesn't want to go to Maryland where they have a four-star frosh waiting to start. UNLV? MMMmmmmaybe. They brought in two QBs already.
I don't know what his academics are. 24 BYU football players made the Big-12 All Academic team, Retzlaff wasn't one of them. BYU did have two cross-country runners named Stanford make the All-Academic team, so...there's that.
When he accepted BYU's offer, his other offers were from Hawaii, New Mexico State and UTEP. Supposedly, he was the #1 ranked Juco QB. He lost his senior HS year to COVID. He was three star QB coming out of high school.
I don't know if Stanford wants a QB who had a sexual assault case dropped against him. BYU was going to suspend him for the first seven games of the season for the honor code violation of premarital sex. He already graduated from BYU. His stats last season: 2,947 yards passing and 20 touchdowns, rushing for another 417 yards and 6 scores, while throwing 12 interceptions. PFF graded him out at the highest grade on the BYU team by the fifth game. Not very accurate, too many turnovers. ESPN had him at #57 QBR in 2024. He was the 11th rated QB out of 15 in the Big 12, so...he'll fit right in here, heh heh heh...
Must have been an interesting experience at BYU, given that Retzlaff is Jewish and BYU is an LDS institution. He has a NIL deal with Manischewitz food brand. His degree is in Exercise Science.
Early last season, Retzlaff stated that he was a Hiesman candidate, so...he doesn't lack confidence.
