Given that my awareness of Stanford sports started with that 1980 season, I think that win over OU was the biggest road win until Stanford beat #1 Notre Dame in South Bend in 1990. Of course, the Ralston and Harbaugh-Shaw glory years had more.
Stanford over Ohio State in Columbus in 1982 was a pretty big deal too! <snip>
Stanford-Ohio State was September 25, 1982. I was flying back to Stanford that day for my junior year. 3-hour drive to Kansas City, connection in Denver, onward to SFO. When I landed in Denver (anyone else remember Stapleton Airport with the world's largest pinball machine?) the game was just starting. I had to board my flight to SFO just as the first half was ending and Stanford was down 13-0. I didn't mind missing the second half because I was convinced that Stanford was going to lose, but the first thing my dormmate said when he met me at the arrival gate was "what a great win over Ohio State!" It was only then that I learned about the Elway-led comeback.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
