The whole situation is so sad.
The Wall Street Journal printed the work of some professor (in Indiana I believe) that calculated the value of different college football programs. The methods were certain flawed in ways, but the conclusion was clear that there are now many football programs with franchise values approaching and even exceeding $500 million.

I would not want to be an individual trying to bring forward a complaint that might impact the value of a business that size and have to bring that complaint forward through the very people with a vested personal interest in the viability of that enterprise.
Sadly, I don't think this is an isolated problem. My guess is that many BCS programs have dirty secrets tucked away at this point.
