This sounds like the rationalization of a child who either doesn't want to admit that he did not prepare (for a test) or that he was beaten by a better team (in a sporting event). "Well, it didn't really matter to us," meaning, well, we didn't really try, which of course covers your own sorry ass performance while cheapening the victory or your opponent.
Of course, Kiffin specializes in childish behavior.Â
