I'm impressed that you had a HS counselor that involved with applying to college, I graduated from high school in 1978 and don't recall any conversations like this (a medium sized public high school in the suburbs of Cincinnati). I applied to Stanford and was rejected, one of my classmates was accepted, he did well enough that when I applied to transfer the next year I was accepted (although not until late Aug or early Sept).
