Well he could have been instructed to run out the back of the end zone.  A safety with a couple seconds left doesnt guarantee a win but still leaves Vandy a vanishingly small chance of a win. Even a heave into a crowd is probably fine because even if it intercepted it probably cant be returned.  Just dont fumble it in the end zone.

But yeah, at the end of the day, its the coach’s responsibility for not relaying the info.
