I was caught unaware by what took place at the Stanford pool on Saturday (per GoStanford; I wasn't there).
Last December, a "College Swimming League" was formed, using a format of competition used in the professional International Swimming League.
This league seems disjoint from the usual conference structure we are used to. The initial 12 teams are
Stanford, Cal, Virginia, Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Indiana, Michigan, NC State, Louisville, Ohio State, Georgia.
For comparison, the top 10 teams at the spring 2026 NCAA Championships were
Men: Texas, Florida, Indiana, ASU, Tennessee, NC State, Cal, Michigan, Virginia, Stanford
Women: Virginia, Stanford, Texas, Cal, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Louisville, NC State, Florida
Each match is a 4-team event. (Saturday, it was Stanford, Cal, Auburn, Ohio State).
A description of the CSL matches:
Saturday was Stanford's first CSL match. Of the 4 teams, the top 2 were clearly going to be Stanford and Cal.
Stanford won in exciting fashion, but really, Cal blew a certain win by being disqualified in a head-to-head final race (4x50 Medley Relay) against Stanford. Cal would have won the match if they had simply lost the race. See the GoStanford article on the match. (The same article appears for the women and the men as the match includes both).
Stanford's 2nd CSL match will be in Walnut, CA (L.A. area) vs Cal, Indiana, NC State. (Stanford could realistically wind up anywhere from 1st to 4th)
The Wild Card match is Nov. 5; The championship is Nov 6. (Indianapolis).
Besides CSL, Stanford men have two meets in the fall (Slug Shootout Oct 16, SMU Invite Nov 18-21) The divers also have one event.
The new year brings four dual meets (UCSB, USC, Cal, Cal), plus ACC Championships, NCAA Championships.
Besides CSL, the women also have two meets in the fall (Texas Swimming invitational Nov 18-20, US Open Dec 2-5). The divers also have one event.
The new year brings five dual meets (UCSB, UCLA, USC, Cal, Cal), plus ACC Championships, NCAA Championships.

A description of the CSL matches:
Quote:A CSL match puts four teams in the pool at once, each with 14 men and 14 women, racing short-course yards in a fast, TV-friendly session — the format the ISL pioneered. Alongside standard events and relays, matches feature Skins races: elimination rounds where swimmers race the same sprint back-to-back, the slowest are knocked out each round, and the last one standing wins. It is the most spectator-friendly event in swimming — and it rewards toughness as much as speed.
The season is compact: six regular-season matches (each team races twice), then a Wild Card match to earn the last spots, and a four-team Championship final.
The clever part is how it fits inside the existing system. CSL matches are fully NCAA-compliant: the times swum count toward NCAA Championship qualification, and the matches satisfy NCAA dual-meet requirements. So for the schools, the CSL replaces part of the traditional fall dual-meet season rather than competing with it — with the league covering travel and lodging and bringing in centralized sponsorship and media revenue.
