Last I heard, Duke had a quota for students from North Carolina and South Carolina. I believe something like 12% to 15% of Duke's class was set aside for those students. It's quite unusual for a top-notch private school to give that kind of preference to local students. If that's still true, then I would say Duke goes to considerable lengths to serve the local community.
