Only 1200 people showed up on Super Bowl Sunday to watch Chiney set a new career high in points with 32. Another notable and very welcome development was the return of Bonnie "The Bomber" Samuelson, who was 4/5 from three for 12 points--all in a mere 11 minutes of play. I can't wait to see what MT's 40 minute adjusted margin shows for Bonnie! Amber also had an outstanding game, with 8 assists and 12 points.Â
Unfortunately, that was all there was to our offense. Joslyn had another of her disappearing games with 1/8, Toni had 0 points, and Sara was 1/5 from 3 for 3 points, and no one else stepped up. I'd like to say that Bonnie's threes opened things up for Chiney, but that simply wasn't the case, since Bonnie was in for so few minutes. Instead, this was the Amber and Chiney show. Amber successfully got the ball to Chiney over and over, and Chiney was making easy shots and not-so-easy shots both look easy. Chiney was 12/24 and her free throw shooting was off a tad, with 8/14. Overall we had 15 assists on 25 made baskets--but shot only 38.5%.
Clearly, anytime you hold a team to 45 points your defense has done something well, and I would say this game fits our typical pattern this year--won by the defense with the offense moving in fits and starts. We raced out to an early lead but then kept letting Oregon State claw their way back when our offense would cool down.Â
Finally a game in which we accumulated a substantial rebounding advantage: 38 rebounds to their 27. We had 12 offensive rebounds, many of which were Chiney putting her misses back. She had 18 rebounds, for her 17th double-double of the season!
Also on the plus side was good ball handling--we had only 8 turnovers. On the other hand, neither of the Oregon schools pressed much or seemed to have the tenacious P2P defenses that might spoil that margin.
This weekend appeared to show improvements in rebounding and ball handling, better passing, and continued good defense. Combine that today with a career performance from Chiney and we got by despite our normal offensive inconsistency.
