I wasn't particularly impressed with either game this weekend. Sure we won easily, but neither was the kind of performance Stanford seems capable of. Further, we didn't get the kind of time out of the subs to improve them for this year, or for next year's players to develop.
On the other hand, I am glad they had decent games and that no one was hurt.
Why, against a 9-13 team, should Chiney play 36 minutes? Yeah, she did get her career high points, and nearly got career high rebounds. I guess it gives her some press, guarantees her another PAC-12 Player of the Week, and maybe some national player of the week honors. I'm sure it is a good feeling for her, but I liked her noting that it was a career high in missed FT. She got some time playing against a 6'6" player -- that is good. But she was put at risk for an injury, and, perhaps more importantly, the subs didn't get time in the game. Frankly, I thought Tara didn't run up scores or stats. If she had something else in mind, I'm not sure what it was. (Chiney was half way there with something like 17pts and 9 rebounds in the first half; that may have had something to do with going for the record.)
Would you say it was encouraging, or disappointing, that essentially half our points were scored by one player? I'd say disappointing. I certainly had the feeling that it was an Amber & Chiney show. I wonder if that was Tara's intent for today's game? Scoring-wise, wasn't this a lot like the South Carolina game that bothered most of us, except the other team wasn't as close?Â
Number of shots (FGA) by Chiney in each game this year:
14, 14, 14, 10, 16, 9, 14, 16, 18, 16, 19, 22(UConn), 13, 19, 16, 13, 15, 18, 15, 11, 13, 24(OSU)
% of our shot attempts by the 2 players shooting the most attempts:
49, 40, 43, 41, 43, 43, 41, 57(Gonzaga), 48, 62 (So Carolina), 51(Tenn), 58 (UConn), 50, 50, 51(at C.al), 46, 49, 47, 42, 39, 39, 60(OSU)
Regarding Jos's shooting: The stats indicate Jos missed 5 layups, 1 jumper, and 1 3-ptr. The first missed layup was a post move from the left block with a hook from directly in front of the basket. The second miss (labelled a jumper) was exactly the same shot, but maybe a foot further out. The third miss (a layup) was a step-through (off the backboard) from the right block. She gets her own rebound and quickly throws up a poor shot (4th miss, a layup) from the left side that loops over the basket. A few seconds later, she makes a shot (labelled a jumper, her only basket of the game) that was almost the same as the 2nd miss, but she wasn't quite directly in front of the basket, about 6' out (still no backboard). Her 5th miss was that right-handed hook again, but from the right block, and off the backboard. I wouldn't call that a high percentage shot, as the first two misses were. Those were all in the first 15 minutes. I guess Tara changed what they were doing, or Jos got cold feet, or no one was feeding her, or the defense kept her from getting the ball in positions, as Jos's next shot isn't form 11 minutes of playing time. That miss (layup) is again starts in the left block and is a hook, shooting from about 6' straight in front of the basket, as the shot clock is down to 3. (Jos disappoints me here as she gave up on going for a rebound, but she could have helped corral it.) She gets charged with an offensive foul (ie, turnover) on what appears to me to be a clean, stationary pick. Her final miss was a in-rhythm 3ptr air ball with about 10 minutes to go in the game. It seems pretty clear she wasn't aggressively shooting in the 2nd half, with only 2 attempts.
Team stats: I was glad to see it was the 4th time this season we had under 10 fouls for the entire game, limiting them to just 5 FTA. At 10 of 18, this was our 3rd worst FT%. Not as gaudy as last time, but it was our 4th best A/FG ratio. Both games this weekend had just 8 TO, which tie with 2 more games as the second best of the season. (But Friday's game was more impressive, since the subs played more.) We easily won the rebounding battle with OR%(41%) +DR% (83%) = 124% (3rd best). If you didn't notice, our 2PT% (39%) was the second worst of the season. OSU had 6 blocks, the most against us this season. We had 12 more FGA attempts than them, our most of the season. Our 7 more steals than them tied for the most of the season. Their 5 more blocks than us was the worst of the season. Our 11 more 2nd chance points was second best of the season.
Amber (38min), Chiney (36min), Jos (35min) weren't out of the game long enough for the statistics while on the bench to be meaningful. The only ones that the last column is meaningful for are Taylor, Sara, Toni, Mikaela, and Bonnie.
Stanford 65, OSU 45

I was a bit surprised that Toni's on-court time was low in team offense, and more surprised that team defense was better with her on the bench! When Mikaela was on court, Stanford lost points to OSU. I was pleasantly surprised that when Taylor was on the court, Stanford was particularly successful at defense. While Sara was on court, even though she only got a single 3-pt basket, Stanford did well on offense. When she was on the bench, the score was only Stanford 24, OSU 21. Bonnie's 4 of 5 threes certainly helped the on-court offense while she was in. Her defense wasn't a problem.
