You may very well be right about controlling reporter access to players. But, again, this is Stanford after all. Any Player who WANTS to get the word out about an injury/illness/whatever has, oh, say, a gazillion ways to do so [think Twitter, Facebook, or probably two or three brand new social media apps that were developed and released to the market while I was typing this post.] To which I'm guessing your response will be that the players themselves have all been instructed by the coaches/Athletic Department not to release that information. To which I would respond [again] that this is Stanford after all, with students who are likely smart enough to get the word out indirectly...if they really WANTED to... and with a media that isn't particularly shy about writing things about the school, the athletic department [think Harbaugh bathroom], or the coaches [think FitzGerald et al. on Dawkins] that, under your theory, would lose them necessary access privileges.
