Chiney had 23 points and 21 rebounds, not to mention 4 assists, 2 steals (one on a coast-to-coast layup as the 1st half buzzer sounded) and finally 4 blocks. Zounds.
Of concern is a possible concussion for Bonnie, who tried to take a charge, got called for a blocking foul, and crashed to the floor with her head taking a bounce. She immediately clutched her head and went to the bench. Up to then she had been 3/7 from three.Â
Sara James got red hot from three point range tonight and was our second leading scorer on 5/8 from three point range. She played 28 minutes, and seemed to have one of her best games.Â
Mikaela Ruef had 7 assists. The High-Low game was working pretty well between Ruef and Chiney off and on all night. It was pretty to watch. One mirthful moment happened when Chiney dished to Reuf who got the basket-and-one. They laughed at the turnabout.
Amber was 2/2 from three and had 6 assists, to go with four turnovers. Tara said at half time that she thought that Amber needed to cut to the basket more. But she didn't do that in the second half much--whether the defense changed I can't say.Â
Joslyn had her usual game. No points in the first half but 10 in the second. I can't for the life of me figure it out. If we were to chart Joslyn's scoring over the season I bet we would find some astronomically high percentage of it coming after halftime. She was the beneficiary of an extraordinary behind-the-back pass from Chiney on a breakaway which left them all laughing.
Looking at this game overall, there were a few times when I thought we might break the game wide open, but WSU kept hanging in and narrowed the lead to a mere eight points with a minute to go in the first half. Galdeira is an amazing frosh, and we can expect to have to worry about her for another three years. Obviously we did not defend her all that well--she had 18 points on 7/16 shooting even though she was limited in minutes by fouls and injury.Â
I was very happy to see a lot of players other than Chiney successfully involved in the offense, and pleased that we shot over 50%. I was worried to see Bonnie's tumble, and I'm not pleased that we had 16 turnovers to WSU's 9. That seemed to show a lack of focus.
All in all, we beat WSU by an identical margin and almost identical score to C.al putting away U.SC. I sense a collision on the way.
