Regardless of what you think of Madsen, coaching experience does not seem to be as important in basketball as other sports. Some of the all-time winningest NBA coaches had no experience before they starting coaching. Lenny Wilkins, Don Nelson, Pat Riley, Doc Rivers had no experience. Mark Jackson had none before getting the Warriors job and he has been a success. Neither did Hoiberg when he got the ISU job. You do need the right combo of personality, motivational skills, player relationships, credibility, etc. I am not saying experience is not a plus, simply that a candidate with the right personality & character factors could be successful quickly regardless of experience level. A successful mid-major coach like Gregg Marshall would be a good choice also, I think, provided they could adapt to our unique recruiting model. My point is that if Muir is indeed thinking of the Madsen route, he will have plenty of good examples of coaches who succeeded with little/ no experience.Â
