This used to bug me and bring out my inner schoolmarm, but I read up on it and realized that maybe I was being pedantic (as is my wont).

In looking into it again upon seeing this thread, I saw this article which I found interesting and illuminating: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/the_g..._hate.html

I used to be very careful about using the word hopefully, but the author offers clearly as a parallel example and I've apparently been very cavalier with it. (For that matter, did I just misuse apparently? While we're at it, is it bad form to split one's present perfect or just one's infinitives?)
