Harbaugh has never said this, but I wonder if there is some thought that bringing in "Harbaugh's guys" from Stanford opens up possible rumblings on the team about favoritism. The only Stanford guys Harbaugh has brought in the last couple of years have ended up on the practice squad (Michael Thomas, Konrad Reuland) where they would clearly have to earn their way onto the main roster. Going that route, I think, would mitigate any hint that Harbaugh was playing favorites. I'm not saying, btw, that Harbaughwould exhibit favoritism toward his former college players, but if it came down to a decision to cut one of two players, one a former Stanford player, the other not, Harbaugh and the former Stanford coaches may not want to open up any possibility of being biased. As Harbaugh so often says (or so we read), "It's all about the team, the team, the team." And nothing tears apart a team more than the perception that coaches are favoring one group of players for reasons other than performance (whether the perception is reality or not).Â
Just a thought.
Just a thought.
