When opinions run out, I resort to facts. Did a little googling. Things may be a little different than what I remember from way back when or maybe I was always a bit off.

The median income of entering U.CB class was 88K for 09-10. The same number for Stanford was $125K. Cut-off for top quartile was $99K. It appears that UC is doing a lot more for financial aid than it used to. Of course there rack rate is also way more, with the current rack rate at UC being more than the full budget at Stanford in my day, adjusted for changes in CPI.
