About 43 people in my midwest hometown had even heard of Stanford (OK, I exaggerate a little). I had zero connection to Stanford and did not know much about it. When I got into high school, though, I remembered seeing the band on TV at the 70 and 71 rose bowl games and thought Stanford must be a pretty cool place to go to school. Wanting to get the hell out of the midwest, I applied only to schools on the coasts. I got my acceptance from Dean Fred (Great!) two weeks before being accepted at Yale, so I had that time to imagine myself at Stanford. At that point it wasn't much of a decision.
