Stanford is the first place I remember being, and I spent my school years thinking about how I'd get back there.
My parents moved into Escondido Village when I was a baby and my father was a Ph.D. student (after several years since he'd co-termed as an undergrad). My earliest memories are set at places like Stanford Children's Center and Cantor (where my mother would take me, probably as an early investment in getting me back on campus as a student).
We moved away after my dad got his Ph.D., but we'd visit periodically for sporting events. Even though I had more perspective every time I visited, no visit ever diminished my childhood perception that Stanford was a special place.
I busted my butt during high school, and on April 1st, 2004 I went home for lunch just in time to see the mailman hand my mother the "big envelope." I think I realized how much force of will I had applied toward becoming a Stanford student, because my thought was something like "Oh good, my acceptance arrived." I was tremendously happy though, and had to fight off senioritis constantly.
My four years exceeded expectations. Now, as an alumnus, one of my favorite hobbies is travelling to football road games. Get ready, Utah; we're coming!
