I, like Garvin and doug, was in the Class of 75. I grew up in northwest Pasadena (not the good side of town), and when I was in the 7th grade, the state decided to build the 210 Freeway right through our neighborhood. We had to move, and ended up moving to Altadena, the town just noth of Pasadena. I remember watching Stanford play in the Rose Bowl vs. Ohio State, and I loved how they beat the favored Buckeyes. Being a mere high school junior, I thought it would be neat to go to a school with a good football team. :) I bought one of those books that had descriptions of colleges in it, and Stanford sounded great. I bought another book that had sample SAT questions in it, studied, and did pretty well on the SATs. Nobody in my family had gone to college, so I relied on friends in high school to give me info. I applied to Stanford, UCLA, and USC. I was accepted to all 3, so it was a no brainer to pick Stanford. We had 10 people from my graduating class get accepted at Stanford, and 9 out of the 10 attended. The 10th went to USC because his father told him there were too many Communists at Stanford!
