Publius, my world had expanded since I was 5 years old. By the time that I was in HS, I paid attention to college basketball too. Duke had captured my fancy when they went to the NCAA final my senior year with Gene Banks, Jim Spanarkel and Mike Gminski. I liked the way they played. This led me to research the school and discover that the rest of it seemed pretty good too.
In my prior post, I skipped over the single most important factor in my decision to pursue admission to Stanford - Tom Watson. My passion in high school was golf. Tom Watson was my role model, not only as a player and a person. But he was a golfing midwesterner like me. And he married a nice Jewish girl from Kansas City! I wanted his life. I figured that I could start with Stanford.
