Bob, as we've discussed, I also had heard that jersey numbers weren't used during Nevers' time. But Jim Rutter told me that Nevers did, in fact, wear a jersey number. Jim says Nevers wore # 1 as a senior in 1925. Before that, he had a different number, I believe maybe # 25. Apparently the number was only on the back of the jersey. Many of the old photos are taken from the front and don't show the number. This video of the 1925 Rose Bowl (Stanford vs. NotreDame) shows numbers on the backs of the jerseys, but not on the fronts. Nevers played in this game, but I wasn't able to pick him out --
