From looking at his picture you really get the sense that dude grew up loving football.

But seriously, the human experience is full of really dumb things that we do because we enjoy them. If the purpose of society was to maximize every human's time on this earth, then a lot of things would be out the window. Alcohol is an easy one, it certainly kills many many more people than football does.

I think if football players, and their families in the case of Pop Warner and high school football, are made aware of the risks as they are known, there is nothing morally wrong with the sport of college football.

This.  Life isn't about doing everything you can solely to extend your life span.  There are activities we all (likely) engage in which are likely to leave us with fewer days on this planet.  And we do those activities knowingly and happily.  Football brings a ton of enjoyment to a significant portion of the US population.
