Nope, YPP is a good statistic.
Let's say Stanford averaged 6.9 YPP on offense for an entire season. That would make Stanford the #7 offense nationally in 2012.
On the other hand, let's say Stanford gave up 5.6 YPP for an entire season. That would make Stanford the #67 defense nationally in 2012.
Basically, offensively anything above 6 YPP is solid and anything above 6.5 YPP is pretty darn good. Defensively, between 5.5 and 5 YPP is OKish; you have to go below 5 YPP to really be doing well.
Anyway, the 1.3 margin in yards per play is about double our average for 2012.
