Last year, when we were complaining that our passing game was hobbled by the lack of wide receivers, I didn't hear anybody saying it didn't matter because we were Tight End U.
It's always nice to have great multi-skilled athletes at every position. But a team, or a coaching staff, or a quarterback who cannot adjust to the lack of a receiving threat at tight end, is not very good.
Our playbook puts zero emphasis on targeting tight ends, but it plays them quite frequently. My question is why: is it possible that the team would be better served by playing one of the talented wide receivers in place of the not-so-talented converted DEs? It kills me that Rector somehow only has 7 catches on the year -- or 1 more than the combined total of the TEs. (To say nothing of Whitfield or Young, who are both relatively underused.)
