I am sort of happy for our south bay neighbors, although there is some irony here.  They went out of pocket last year to play in some meaningless bowl, and then bailed on the Stanford rivalry over $250,000 (estimate).  Meanwhile by beating FSU they will miss out on their share of an $8.5 million Fiesta Bowl payout (around $700,000).  Are you desperate for money or not, Spartans?

Unless NIU loses, FSU was probably not going to pass them in the rankings, right? So FSU likely would not have gone to a BCS bowl anyway as the non-AQ rule explicitly says the highest-ranked non-AQ gets the guaranteed spot.
