My son is a senior at Princeton where there is rampant grade deflation. Only 35% of all students are allowed to get an A in any class. it has been thus for about a decade now. No one except the provost is happy about it. Apparently, the arrogant thinking was that if Princeton stopped the runaway grading inflation, the other schools would have a collective gasp of realization that their way was the wrong way, and dammit, back to an average C+ grading system.
Princeton might be backtracking, though: http://www.thewire.com/national/2013/10/...-as/70270/
Of course, Hahvahd and Yale and Stanford and others just laaaaaaaaugh long and loud at Princeton. The policy hasn't stunted admissions applications, which was one fear. Growth in applications from class of 2007 to class of 2017 increased slightly more at Princeton (68.5%) compared to Harvard (66.9%) or Yale (67.0%).
