My frosh year, I had an English teacher who promised all of us that if we worked hard, did multiple rewrites, listened closely, it was possible to earn a "C" in his class.  He said, "I'm not promising anything, but some of you may even get "B's."  As for A's?  He said "An 'A' is a publishable paper.  When one of you produces something that can be published, we can talk about an 'A.'"

True to his word, he gave out 16 C's, four D's, one F and 5 B's.  No A's.  A good friend of mine had straight A's through school, except for the C in that class.
