My PhD's in a field other than super nerd math. But I can tell you that unless you put restrictions on the process that generates the sequence (e.g., a limit on how complicated a rule you can use to calculate the answer), the number of possible correct answers is literally infinite. (Indeed, it doesn't even need to be super-complicated: if you allow the rule generating the sequence to be a fifth-order polynomial function, that's enough to give an infinite number of possible correct answers).
If you require it to be the simplest rule that fits the example given, however, then the answer seems pretty clear.
