There is another new coach in the Pac since 2009 that was left out of this analysis: David Shaw. He did not improve performance on the field. (They went from 12-1 to 11-2.) The recruiting ranking was essentially a wash. (#26 in 2010, #22 in 2011.)
Note: my tongue is firmly in my cheek. I firmly believe that Shaw has succeeded on and off the field. And Stanford's situation is more than a little bit better than Cal's.
At least the writer did preface the article with "coaches hired to fix losing programs." So maybe I should allow him this omission.
