You bring up a good point. Cal football has never been able to sell itself and recruit nationally, which is a big difference from Stanford. I think it's partially a "brand" issue, the word "Berkeley" just conjures up a certain image that is not embraced by a lot of the country in spite of the quality of the school. Some of their other sports have overcome this but not football.Â
Their best bet is probably to try to lock down Sacramento, the bay area, the Central Valley, etc. and try their luck in LA. I went back and looked at Tedford's 2004 team, which was 10-1. Out of 115 guys they had 1 from Texas and 1 from Canada. The rest were from California, including a lot of northern California. But then if that's your target, is Dykes going to connect with them? I don't know.Â
