Just got back from the game. A few observations:
It was a little weird to be in a virtually full, very raucous Maples again. It was even weirder to see that the "virtually", as opposed to "totally", full was due to empty seats primarily in the lower bowl/season ticket sections. Those sections clearly had the highest percentage of empty seats. Congrats to the Athletic Dept -- they seem to have finally achieved their goal [See Lefty's earlier post]
While it is true that there were a lot of UofA fans and they were, at times, very loud, there was a long stretch of the game when they were definitely NOT as loud as the Card fans.
For most of the second half I thought I was back at the Rose Bowl...watching Gaffney go up the middle and getting stuffed, over...and over...and over...and over...and
Time and again we passed up tough, but makeable, outside opportunities from the outside to take it in, get stuffed, not get the call, and head back down to the other end with 0.
In his postgame radio show, Dawkins said that they knew Sean Miller would foul at the end to prevent us getting off a 3-pointer, because that's what he always does. Which begs the question -- why didn't we run a play that would have made it harder for them to do that an/or at least have gotten us 3 free throws?
Bless his heart, Chasson Randle seems like a really good guy and hard worker, but, with reference to that other thread about who you would want to take a last-second, game-on-the-line shot, I'm afraid I can't nominate Randle. I recall a couple of Randle misses, but no makes. Am I forgetting some? one?
This team plays like a really good intramural squad... a lot of talent that looks like they get together right before a game, warm up, and go at it. Coaching? Nah, don't have the time. Plays? Not many. They're good enough to beat teams with less talent and even teams with more talent on occasion [if those teams have an off night]. But they look like they could be a lot better than they are.
Another good loss...the kind that might even get you a first round NIT game at home...
Sigh.
