Won't even bother responding to Garvin, as he clearly can't be objective on certain subjects (notwithstanding his insights on others).
BC - I agree with almost everything you said in your post. I am NOT suggesting that Johnny has been as successful (on the basketball court) as we had hoped. I would just ask that some of you pause in assessing your disdain for him, and consider that it may be possible that one or more of the following points are valid:
BC - I agree with almost everything you said in your post. I am NOT suggesting that Johnny has been as successful (on the basketball court) as we had hoped. I would just ask that some of you pause in assessing your disdain for him, and consider that it may be possible that one or more of the following points are valid:
- While I had no intention of bringing up TJ in this discussion, it's simply irrational to discuss a coach's total Win-Loss record at a school without considering factors that significantly influenced the first 20-30% of those games.
- I NEVER suggested that being a "nice guy"/"good fit" (like our Buddy) is enough to attain or retain your job in a role like this. I am simply suggesting that we not take that factor for granted, lest we put ourselves in the category of the hypocritical fans of the schools we rip to shreds for hiring jack-a** "winners". Heck, I was embarrassed every time I saw Wlat, from pretty much the day after I heard about his "no guns in the locker room" speech.
- We many also take JD's recruiting acumen (to which you've alluded) for granted. Maybe the stars just aligned this year, and "it was all the Stanford thing", but it's also possible that those kids/parents saw something in JD that we do not. It's not like he got this class because Brook & Robin's mom decided where her kids were going years before the coach arrived.
- The main, somewhat nuanced, point that I've been trying (and apparently failing) to make is that, while I'm not exactly a JD Fan Boy, and would NOT commit to retaining him if I were Bernard Muir right now, the blatant disdain I've seem from certain posters on this board suggests that he's absolutely TERRIBLE, and I simply don't believe that's a fair assessment. As I indicated in my earlier post, our overall performance HAS approximated my EXPECTATIONS (not hopes) for this season (given the loss of 4 of his top 10 players), and like you, I "will root for him as long as he is our coach."
He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. - John Stuart Mill
