Yes, Wynton is still using a Monette.
She has been playing since she was 8. She is now 17. 9 1/2 years. She improves quite a bit every summer, when she actually puts in some time. She went to Interlochen the last 2 summers, which forced her to play a lot. She plays jazz primarily, although she does have both classical and jazz instructors. Working on Hummel now. The Wynton and Ridenour lessons were one time things, of course. No one gets them full time. I do have Wynton's cell number, though....
It was difficult to get her to play well for that video, which was actually her college arts supplement. She gets nervous when she is the center of attention and tightens her throat - a real no-no.
She is really good on the flugelhorn. Probably better than on the trumpet.
I couldn't tell that she was nervous. She played very well! The nerves will eventually go away the more she is exposed to center stage.
I haven't performed in almost 10 years, but I still pop in a CD or pull up YouTube and play along from time to time. My endurance allows me to enjoy it for maybe an hour. The decision to stop playing wasn't difficult. I never wanted to become a full-time musician...that life is hard with its minimal, unstable income and unpredictable schedules. It made it extremely difficult to maintain relationships, too. What a relief it was to be able to relax on the weekend and enjoy a date on a Saturday night after a week of work at the office.
If I had a dollar every time I was distracted, I wish I had some ice cream.
