Fascinating how this thread exposes our different personalities. When I saw "tradition" I immediately thought "history" and "culture" while others thought more mathematically.
I supposed there are two quite different questions we could ask:
1) To what extent are football and men's basketball at Stanford today influenced by their own long traditions of success?
2) Has football or men's basketball had a deeper influence on Stanford's reputation for athletic success? (I.e., which figures more prominently in hearts of alums, fans, and the general public.)
