One of the reasons the players were probably so quiet was that, frankly, so many new uniform styles adopted by college teams are hideous.  These fake unis were especially bad, but not so far from how bad  a lot of real uniforms look (see, e.g., the Maryland unis a couple of years ago, to cite but one of many examples).
