I think CTCard has it right. Most kids are applying to so many schools now that the acceptance rates are not quite meaningless but not as meaningful as they were when people applied to 3 or 4 schools. The yield rates are another matter. 10-15 years ago, IIRC, there were fewer than 20 schools with yield rates over 50%. (Out of what, 2,000 four-years schools in the country?) I remember a tour of Tufts in the late 90s where the admissions guy proudly announced that they got 12,000 applications for a class of 1,100. What he didn't mention is that they had to admit over 4,000 in order to get those 1,100 students .
