One of the comments resonated with me - seems pretty simplistic, but the power of language has been demonstrated over and over: refer to concussions as "brain injuries," which is clearly what they are. The word "concussion" has been associated over the years with "having your bell rung" and other euphemisms - maybe it takes a change in terminology to rearrange people's mental furniture.
