Interesting about UCLA. I wonder if it's the same for state universities elsewhere. I dimly remember that when my son's friends were applying for colleges 15 or so years ago, it was exactly the opposite at the University of Virginia. At that time, it was apparently darned near impossible to get in from out of state, but a fairly manageable (don't remember the number, but thinking 30-35%) admissions rate from in state.
