Those are the same people that use the term "Frisco." They aren't from our fair state! And if they say "the 101" or "the 280" they are likely from SoCal and not NorCal. I guess with that much traffic in LA, I might put an emphasis on the freeways as well. "The 405 is the world's longest parking lot!"
Lived in LA some 30 years ago. Back then SoCal people referred to freeways not by number, but by name, as in: Hollywood Freeway, Golden State Freeway, San Diego Freeway, etc. Have customs changed?

Things have changed. Did you miss the Foothill Freeway? Artesia? Riverside? Foothills Expressway? Laguna? Escondido? And at least 10 others. Now its just numbers. Just like phone numbers. Back in the day my phone number was EDgewood 5-4568; now its all numbers including an area code I dont even recognize :)

I grew up in Pasadena. We called all the freeways by their names except for the 605. We could never remember its name!
